“Sit.” Justice pointed to the blacktop of the roof.

Still shaking, Chloe sank down onto the sun-warmed surface.

“Thanks for the quick escape.” Chloe fidgeted with her hands in her lap.

“It’s bad enough when they do it to me, but I can’t stand it when they gang up on you like that.”

“They aren’t ganging up.” Chloe laughed. “They just want to help. Even your mother,” she grudgingly admitted.

“I never realized how much pressure comes with an ability like yours. Not until recently.” Justice sat opposite her, hugging his knees to his chest. He was still in a vulnerable state from the use of his prophetic gift. “It’s hard being the center of all that.” He waved his hand back toward the kitchen.

“They mean well.” Chloe picked at a paint stain on her jeans. Her power still churned in her chest, but the overwhelming onslaught of information had faded the moment she left the kitchen with Justice.

“You know that’s why I came back sooner than Mom wanted.” Justice rested his forehead against his arms.

“You were gone for three whole months.” Chloe sighed. “It felt like years.”

“Right? It was awful without you, Chlo. I had to argue with Mom to get her to come back with me. She wanted me to train with her for at least a year before we came home.”

“You need it,” Chloe said.

“I needed to be here more. Scarlet is great. And things are going really good with Mom, but the two of them together … it was too much fussing. Too many questions. You know how I hate that.”

“I wondered if that was getting to you.” Chloe’s heart skipped a beat at this casual criticism of his girlfriend.

“She means well. Both of them.” He gave a rueful smile. “But you never expect anything from me. You don’t need me the way they do.”

“I beg to differ,” Chloe was quick to interrupt him. “I need you, Justice. You and Dahlia are my best friends. I don’t function well without either of you.”

“But you don’t rely on me to make you … happy. I love that about our friendship. I can be myself with you and not worry about how you’ll respond or what you need from me.” He shrugged. “It turned out I didn’t function so well without you either.”

“And now? With everyone here?”

“It’s better with you and Dahl.”

“Then we’ll figure out a way to get through the training you need, and we’ll deal with all the unwanted attention that comes with it.”

“Thanks, Chlo.” Justice laid back on his elbows, looking up at the sky.

Chloe smiled, admiring his profile. She would do anything for him. Even be his friend when she wanted so much more. That was what being a Complement meant. She would be whatever he needed her to be, for as long as he needed it. That she loved him more than anyone in this world ever would was enough to sustain her … for now.
